| The formation of North Whyalla Basketball clubs in 2024 was essentially the rebranding of Sharks basketball Club who folded at this time. | ![]() |
Now backed by the strong North Whyalla Sporting club, which encompasses their football club and Kiwi Netball club North entered the competition with 36 teams, making them the largest club in the association at that time.
| It could be argued that North have been around since the mid sixties when Graham & Barb Stringer formed “Magpies” basketball club. Magpies were a strong club that featured many of the local North whyalla footballers.
They had many decorated players. Players like Michael Ahmat who came to Whyalla to play for Magpies in the early 70’s, Prior to this Michael played the Tokyo & Mexico Olympics, making him Australia’s first aboriginal Olympic basketball player. Kym Borrett who played for magpies in the late 70’s went on to play in the NBL in the original 36ers squad. Magpies also had a strong Women’s A grade which won an impressive 15 premierships from 1972 to the 1987. |

When Magpies disbanded in 1988 many of the Magpies teams moved across to Sharks basketball club which was run by the local police.
The formation of the modern 2024 North whyalla club was driven by inaugural President Tom Baulderstone and his wife Jaimee. They came into the association as an established powerhouse when they effectively took over Sharks basketball club.
