In this first chapter Darren talks about the wonderful old lady who got him hooked on the game (and she’s still there – Pat Kemp), the players he aspired to beat as he began to take his basketball more serious (Ray Williamson, Peter Dawson and Trevor Castle- not aiming too high there), and about his move to Adelaide to play with Woodville where he played against NBL legends such as Al Green, Mark Davis, Dwayne Nelson, Scott Ninnis and others.

When preparing this video for its premier release, we were approached by a couple of under employed British actors looking for an opportunity to break into the lucrative “Whyalla basketball Association web site voice over” market. We were looking for someone to do a voice over introduction so had to choose between Mr Bean and Batman’s Alfred.

The story continues- After spending 3 years playing in the Adelaide District competition as well as the SEABL with Woodville, Darren (Razz) Quinn decided to return home to Whyalla, a more mature person and now a totally dominant player.

He talks about the Whyalla Warriors era, a 4 year period when Whyalla had men’s and women’s teams competing in a state wide regional basketball competition (Southern Conference Basketball.) Darren was selected in the All Star First 5 all 4 years of the competition. Darren also won the League MVP and was the Leading scorer in the competition for its last 2 seasons.

In this chapter he also talks about some of his great team mates like Wayne Wilson, Chris Blakemore, The Higgins brothers (Andrew, Neil, Tony) Shaun Clements and some of his great opponents like Andrew Corbett, The Boundy brothers (Scott and Shane) , Dean Revil.

After a warm welcome back by Ron Swanson, we enter the final instalment of the Quinny mini-series where Darren offers his advice to young players then acknowledges the support, encouragement and inspiration of the many people who have made significant impact on his basketball life and / or Whyalla basketball in general.

After recording and editing the interview on the final review he realised he had forgotten to acknowledge the huge workload undertaken for the WBA by Darren Hoffman. (A terrible oversight since Hoffy’s name was at the top of his list of names he intended to mention). Apologies to Hoffy from Quinny, you are a huge part in making the WBA work.

It is clear Darren holds a special place in his heart for WBA legend Pat Kemp ( Pat has been an administrator for the WBA throughout all of Darren’s 42 year career.) and that he appreciates the support he received from his parents, his brothers Brian and Michael and especially his wife Fiona.

It is also clear after talking with Darren about his career and ongoing passion for the game that Whyalla Basketball would be much poorer without the involvement of the Quinn family for the past 42 years.
