PAST CLUBS
BEVAN
Bevan was the WBA’s 2nd oldest club established in 1970. Bevan’s on court success is evident by the fact they hold the record for the most MA premierships in the WBA.
SHARKS
Sharks Basketball club was started by a group of policemen in 1988. In the early years Organisation & administration of Sharks including a monthly gazette featuring awards such as the Gummy Shark award was done by Greg “Toots” & Cindy Turner & Phil & Debbie Twiggs.
1955 – GIANTS
GIANTS– Starting in 1955 making them won of the founding clubs of International rules Basketball in Whyalla.
1955 – JAFFA’S
JAFFAS – Starting in 1955 Jaffas were won of the founding clubs of International rules Basketball in Whyalla.
1955 – MORMONS / LATTER DAY SAINTS (L.D.S)
LATTER DAY SAINTS (L.D.S)–In 1955 the Mormons basketball club became one of the WBA’s founding clubs.
1955 – POSTALS
POSTALS – Are one of the founding clubs of the WBA. They started as a group of workers from the South Australian Postal Institute.
1955 – TIGERS
TIGERS–In 1955 the Tigers beat the 30 -9 in the 1st season of International rules Basketball ever Played in Whyalla.
1957 – KNIGHTS
PAST CLUBSThe Knights Basketball Club came into being at the start of the 1957/8 season with the formation of an U16 boys team to enter the new competition created by the association. The team was made up by a number of school friends and who played colts football for...
1957 – TANGO
TANGO – Were part of the first season pf Women’s basketball in Whyalla.
1957 – TARANTULA’S
TARANTULAS – Started in 1957 in the Inaugural season of Women’s International rules Basketball in Whyalla.
1960 – Y M C A
YMCA– Formed in the early 60’s the YMCA consisted of a number of men’s and boys teams.
1960 – DRAGONS
DRAGONS – Formed in the early 60’s by a group of Westy footballers the dragons and competed into the late 60’s.
1960 – REBELS
REBELS – Played right throughout the ^0’s in both Mens and Women’s grades.
1963 – BACHELORS
BACHELORS – Formed in the early 60’s the Bachelors fielded a number of tams in both Men and Women’s competion as well as some junior teams.
1963 – VALIANTS
Valiants Basketball Club was formed from an idea on the 4th of Sept 1963 when a meeting was held to start a Men’s team to compete in the 1963-64 season.
1964 – FIREBALLS
FIREBALLS– Entered the WBA competition as an A grade team in the mid 60’s.
1964 – MAGPIES
MAGPIES- basketball Club was formed in the mid 1960s, based largely around the North Whyalla footballers and their wives / girlfreinds etc.
1964 – PANTHERS
PANTHERS – Were a small unisex team that only competed for 4 years in the competition they did however mange to win 2 premierships and come runner-up in another 2 in this short time.
1965 – BULLDOGS
BULLDOGS– Formed in 1965 they won the U16B premiership in 1965-66, thanks largely to MVP Ian Smith.
1965 – CELTICS
CELTICS– Formed in 1965, and quickly gained a reputation as a strong club in the female divisions.
1965 – CHURCH
CHURCH – Formed in 1965, they fielded many teams winning an impressive 12 premierships and 18 runner ups awards in the 13 year history.
1966 – IRON KNOB
IRON KNOB – For approximately 10 years in the late 60’s early 70’s a number of teams competed under the iron knob banner.
1967 – ROBINETTES
ROBINETTES- Basketball Club was formed in 1967/68 by foundation members Elaine Dunn & Enid Lydeamore.
1968 – EYRE
Eyre- Basketball Club was formed in 68 and played until the early 70’s.
1968 – SAINTS
SAINTS – Basketball Club was formed in 1968. They competed in the WBA competition until the late 70’s.
1969 – BROROWA BEARS
Brorowa was originally formed by a group of Whyalla High School teachers in 1969, the name coming from the first few letters of the streets surrounding the school – Broadbent Tce, Roberts Tce and Walker Cres.
1971 – BAPTIST
BAPTIST– One can only assume consisted of a group of men from the Baptist church participated in the MB grade comp in the early 70’s.
1971 – NOMADS
NOMADS– were conceived in autumn 1971 following a discussion by 3 BHP electrical apprentices Darrel Raneberg, Lawrie Townsend & Ray Girvin all working at the Steelworks Finishing End.
1971 – VAMPIRE’S
VAMPIRE’s– Social team started in 1970 and unfortunately, we don’t have much more information than that!
1972 – WITSS
WITSS– Was an acronym for Whyalla Institute of Technology Staff and Students. They entered the competition with a number of teams in the 70’s.
